Top-dressage rider sanctioned by FEI: Prohibited substance found in horse

The American top-dressage rider and trainer Taylor Rowsey has received a so-called administrative sanction from the FEI after it was revealed that her horse Demetrios had a prohibited medicine in his blood.

The nine-year-old gelding Demetrios participated back in November at CDI1* in Therman in California. At this event the horse was tested positive for the prohibited substance Gabapentin. The-33-year old rider Taylor Rowsey was back then reported on the FEI table of administrative sanctions.

On a daily basis, Rowsey is based in San Diego in California and runs Taylored Dressage. The CDI1* was Demetrios' first time at this kind of event. The horse was though disqualified when Gabapentin was found in his blood. The medicine is normally used for humans with nerve pains or to limit the cases of epilepsy.

Furthermore, the German rider Carina Sholz is also sanctioned after Acetylpromazin was discovered in the blood of her 14-year-old gelding Tarantino at the dressage World Cup in Poland back in October 2020.

Acetylpromazin was typically used back in the 1950s as an antipsychotic for humans, but today it is mostly given to animals as calming substance - but prohibited at competitions.

As part of the sanctions the riders are placed on a public list on FEI's website. To be removed from this list the riders must pay a fine.

It is uncertain what the causes have been to give the horses Gabapentin and Acetylpromazin. Whether this will lead to further consequences are so far unknown, but here at Malgré Tout we follow the case closely.
